With a population of only 3,627 and an area of only one square mile, Lake Clarke Shores is a small town in Palm Beach County, Florida that was incorporated in 1957. This young town is not too young, however, to escape the opioid crisis that has required so many methadone clinics in Florida. Even here, a Lake Clarke Shores methadone clinic can be found for residents struggling with opioid addiction. One of the hallmarks of addiction is that a person’s entire life begins to revolve around drugs, so that every moment is about getting drugs, taking drugs, recovering from drugs, or fixing problems created by drugs. Medication Assisted Treatment, or MAT, aims to change that through a combination of methadone therapy and comprehensive addiction treatments such as behavioral therapy and counseling. SAMHSA, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Association, defines the goal of MAT as a full recovery, which includes being able to live a self-directed life. Methadone is one of the key components of a recovery plan that allows people with opioid addictions to take back control and once more determine the direction of their own lives.
